The Story of Oakley the Siberian Husky

We got Oakley in February of 2012. We were on a mini-vacation in Munising, Michigan, and we had just gotten back from a fun day of hiking and sight seeing, when I sat down to check a few things on my laptop. I had gotten a message from a friend of mine. She told me she had gone and met the most adorable and friendly husky over in Petoskey, Michigan. She said she thought she would be a perfect addition to our family and told me that I should go check her out. Jamie and I had been talking about adding another dog to the pack since we had moved into our bigger home. With almost 1/2 acre of fenced in yard, the space was no longer an issue!

I contacted the family who was having to re-home the dog to find out more. She told me the dog was a little over 2 years old, fixed, and a very good dog. They had to get rid of her because they were living in a small 2 bedroom apartment with no yard, and just no longer had much time for her, so they were trying to find her the perfect home. She sent me a bunch of pictures which I then forwarded to Jamie.

We got home from the mini-vacation and talked about the dog a bit more during the week.  I was emailing back and forth with the owner, asking a million questions, and she offered to bring Oakely, and all of her things over to our house.  That way she could meet Shiloh and Shelby, and if things didn’t work out, they could just take her home, which was nice considering they lived about 110 miles away!  So I told Jamie about this, and he said, go ahead and have them bring her over.  We were both really excited about our potential new adoption!

We don’t know a whole lot about Oakley’s past, but we do know that the people we got her from, had adopted her from a shelter, who had her listed as being 1 year old. So the people we got her from were assuming she was around 2 – 3 years old. We also know that Oakley came from an abusive situation before she was at the shelter. Her former owners (not the people we got her from), had starved and abused her. So she had a rough beginning to life!

When Oakley arrived at our home, we knew right away that she was much older then we all had thought. She was a bit overweight, and she had some pains when she laid down. This did not make us want her any less! Shiloh and Shelby got along great with her and we decided to welcome her into our pack!

We took Oakley to the vet and found out she was probably around 6 – 7 years old. She also has a slight clicking in her back knees which is a sign of early arthritis, so we are doing everything we can to keep it minimal! She also had surgery the 2nd week she was with us to remove an eyelid tumor that was bugging her. She is also now seeing a Chiropractor for her artritis issues! She has been a wonderful addition to our pack!
